Right out of the box Thesis includes some pretty powerful SEO options. One of the most important ones is the meta description box in the add new post page. Whenever you create a new post you should always get in the habit of filling this out accurately with relative keywords.

For example I just tested a search in Google for one of my posts. I searched for how to add a shadow border in Thesis. It came up number 1 but more importantly there was a accurate description of what the page was about. Check it out…

The “Add shadow border to your blog page” was the title of my post. The “-customize Thesis through…” was part of the title tag option which you can learn about HERE

The description is from when I filled out the meta description box when I wrote the post. Make sure you are using relevant keywords…

Now you can see why it is so important to include the meta description. If you don’t, the google algorithm will just pick arbitrary content from your page that it deems important. More than likely it wont make any sense, it will look unprofessional, and probably deter anyone from clicking through.

Change the title of your blog

Check out the very top of your browser. That area is called the “title” bar. As you navigate through this site I put a custom saying in there just to change it up a little bit. Here’s how you can add your own cutomization to the title bar….

Go to Dashboard —-> Appearance —-> Thesis Options….

You can also choose to show, or not to show, your site’s name and tagline. Pick whatever you want to give the desired effect. Hit the save button.

Add post title to your URL

When you click on a post link in your site it takes you to that particlular post. By default, your URL will display the post id #. For example if you have a post named “The best recipe for brownies” by default the URL will read…

http://www.yoursite/?p=1

or something close to it.

You want it to read like this…

http://www.yoursite/The-best-recipe-for-brownies

If you want the URL to display the name of your post in it’s address go to your wp dashboard —> settings —>permalinks and make the following changes…

click the “custom structure” button and type in “%postname%”. Hit the save button and check it out.
